Wisdom Teeth

Problems caused by Wisdom Teeth

Misaligned wisdom teeth can position in different directions, horizontally or angled inward or outward, impacting surrounding teeth and your overall mouth.

At our office in Detroit wisdom teeth removal is offered because wisdom teeth can erupt through the gum making the area vulnerable to bacteria and subsequently, an infection. This can result in stiffness, swelling, and illness, not to mention a lot of pain. You are also more at risk for tooth decay and gum disease because of the hard-to-reach location of the wisdom teeth.

What happens if you don’t remove your wisdom teeth? They will create complications such as impacting and damaging your other healthy teeth. As mentioned, your wisdom teeth will angle themselves against the second molars, changing your bite. Being in the corners, wisdom teeth are also difficult to reach, often causing tooth decay and painful infection.

What if your wisdom teeth never erupt? Should you leave them in? It is usually better to have them removed as early as possible. There is a chance the epithelial lining around the tooth could become cancerous. It is recommended to have wisdom teeth removed before the root is fully formed because extraction becomes more difficult and will require a long recovery period.

What is the recovery from a wisdom teeth procedure?

Everyone recovers differently but most patients take about a week. There are many things you can do for an effective and speedy recovery:

  • Do not use a straw, sip on water instead.
  •
  • Do not swish, gulp or spit; that can lead to a dry socket
  •
  • Do not blow
  •
  • Keep your head elevated for a few days
  •
  • Avoid brushing your teeth for a few days after your surgery
  •
  • Use an ice pack on the outside of your cheeks
  •
  • No solid foods for at least 24 hours following your procedure
  •
  • No smoking (another factor that causes a dry socket)
  •
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  •
  • Smoothies or broth are great options for a few days, but make sure they are lukewarm and not too cold
  •
  • Avoid chewing for as long as possible. Soft foods like pasta and yogurt are great choices
  •
  • This is a time to rest, not to be involved in strenuous exercises
  •

When wisdom teeth are poorly aligned they can damage adjacent teeth and the jawbone.

Changes to expect after having wisdom teeth removed

You will have cold sensitivity for several months, especially on your second molars, when you have cold drinks or ice cream.

Your teeth need to re-calcify. In the meantime, you can use fluoride toothpaste such as Sensodyne, which is designed for sensitive teeth. You may feel folds in your gum line while your bone heals. As part of that bone remodeling, you may experience some bone-ache from time to time. You may also notice your face thinning your wisdom teeth are extracted. Your bones will need time to adjust to the sudden emptiness and resorption.
