Bone Regeneration

What is Bone Regeneration?

Bone regeneration is a dental specialty that involves regrowing lost jawbone that occurs after tooth extractions so that a dental implant can be placed.

When you lose adult teeth, your body’s natural healing response can result in significant bone deterioration. Over time, your jawbone may atrophy and resorb where you no longer have teeth. This often makes the site of your missing tooth too narrow to fit a dental implant.

There are many reasons why a patient may have undergone a tooth extraction, such as:

  • Tooth decay
  •
  • Gum disease
  •
  • Tooth impaction
  •
  • Overcrowded teeth
  •
  • Breakage due to accident or injury
  •

Thankfully, you don’t have to live with missing teeth.

With modern advancements in the field of dentistry, bone-loss does not have to stop you from having the smile you want. Our Detroit Dentists at Lakeshore Dental Specialists can regenerate your damaged bone in preparation for sturdy and functional dental implants.

The Bone Regeneration Procedure

Sometimes, our dentists may be able to complete the bone graft at the same time as your implant placement.

If the existing bone you have to work with is minimal, it may be necessary to allow the grafted site to heal for four to six months prior to implant placement. Your treatment starts with photographs and 3D images to detect bone loss. Your treatment may include horizontal and vertical bone augmentation to rebuild lost bone in preparation for your new implants. Our dentists are trained in various techniques to reconstruct the bone.

For example, you may have a combination of bone grafting with a titanium mesh (non-resorbable) membrane that is secured with tacks. Once your bone and gums are restored, your mouth is ready for implant placement. After your treatment, our dentists may take cross-sectional 3D scans to display how much bone width you gained following the procedure.

Avoid brushing or rinsing your mouth to avoid disturbing the clot at the bone grafting site on Day 1. You may have non-alcoholic drinks shortly after your procedure, but please avoid hot beverages. It is important not to drink through a straw, as this creates pressure that can release the clot and cause a condition known as dry socket.

Your newly grafted bone goes through several stages of healing. During this time, your own bone regenerates and replaces the graft naturally. In the first four to six weeks after your procedure, the graft is soft and malleable. Soft, non-sticky foods are best to consume. When it feels comfortable, you may resume your normal diet and chew on both sides.
